The war of consoles
Japanese market the Sega Saturn, a 32-bit
machine that, with its star title Virtua Fighter -one of the first fighting
games to use polygonal 3D technology- was a relative success. However, a few
days later Sony was introduced to the video game console market with its
PlayStation, a machine that presented its Ridge Racer to compete with Virtua
Fighter.
At the end of 1995 Sega maintained in its
catalog a total of seven incompatible systems (Sega Saturn, Megadrive, Game
Gear, Sega Pico, Sega CD, Sega 32X and Sega 32XCD), forcing the company to
abandon its oldest platforms to concentrate on the Saturn. Theoretically Sega's
machine was more powerful than its Sony rival, but the truth is that the Saturn
chips were of inferior quality, which, along with some rumors about the
difficulties that programmers found to develop video games for the system ,
made the tastes of the public to the PlayStation. Nintendo, meanwhile, had
presented its new Nintendo 64 console on June 23, 1996.
